Coaching, Writing, Pro Shop
One of the first 20 USBC Gold Level Coaches, Bill has been a Bowlers Journal magazine's “Top 100 Coach” since the list's inception in 2006. Bill has been teaching professionally since 1980 including being a Head Teaching Pro for Professional Bowling Camps from 1980-1990 and a Teaching Pro at Bowling This Month's Super School in 1997. Bill wrote a weekly instructional article – “Bill Spigner's Pro's Corner” – for the Chicago Bowler from 1985-1990; “Bill Spigner's Bowling Clinic” instructional articles for Bowling Digest magazine for 22 years from 1983-2004; and in 2008 began writing “The Pro Approach” for Bowlers Journal magazine. In 2011, Bill was named to the USA Bowling Coach Team which teaches volunteers how to coach young bowlers.
Bill is a member of the Storm and Turbo Grips Regional Staff and has worked with many notable touring professional bowlers including 18-time LPBT & PWBA Champion Kim Adler; PBA Hall-of-Famer's Mark Williams, Johnny Petraglia and Dave Soutar; 10-time PBA Champion Steve Neff; PBA Champion Dennis Lane; bowling legend Carmen Salvino; PBA Champion, Chris Loschetter; and PBA Champion, Jon Van Hees. Since 2003 Bill has also been a coach of the Vernon Hills High School Boy's Bowling Team and in the IHSA State Tournament they finished 2nd in 2012, 2nd in 2011 and 3rd in 2006. Bill also helped coach the Indiana University Boy's Bowling Team when his older son Robby was a student there and the University of Illinois Boy's Bowling Team when his youngest son Jimmy was a student there.
In addition to his teaching credentials Bill is highly regarded for his ball fitting and drilling, grip analysis, and equipment recommendation abilities which started in 1985 when he opened Bill Spigner's Pro's Corner Pro Shop inside Strike 'N Spare Lanes in Northbrook, IL. In 1989 Bill built Hawthorn Lanes in Vernon Hills, IL and he moved his pro shop inside it. Bill owned and operated Bill Spigner's Pro's Corner Pro Shop inside Hawthorn Lanes from 1989 until 2003 when he sold it to long-time employee Brian Chilcutt.
From 1989-2008 Bill was also the General Manger and Proprietor of Hawthorn Lanes and was instrumental in bringing professional bowling back to the Chicagoland area as Hawthorn Lanes was the host to 21 PBA Tournaments including 7 National PBA Tournaments and 14 Regional PBA Tournaments. The reputation of the lane conditioning programs that Bill designed made Hawthorn Lanes THE place to bowl if you were a competitive youth or adult bowler. With Bill's guidance the Hawthorn Majors, Hawthorn Classic, and Hawthorn Sport leagues grew to be some of the largest competitive leagues in the country and Hawthorn Lanes was one of the first bowling centers in the USA to offer both youth and adult Sport Leagues. Youth bowlers coming out of the Hawthorn Lanes youth program have won numerous local, state, and national Stars of Tomorrow Awards, and many have gone on to have success on the PBA Regional and National Tours. In 2008, Bill sold Hawthorn Lanes to Brunswick Corporation and it's now known as Brunswick Zone Hawthorn.
Bill utilizes video taping and form analysis software in all of his lessons, and his instruction is tailored to the bowler's level of expertise, whether they are a beginner or a very advanced player. Bill gives his lessons at Brunswick Zone Hawthorn, 316 Center Drive, Vernon Hills, IL by appointment only, but arrangements can be made if you are interested in having Bill come to your home bowling center for instructions whether it's for lessons for a group of people, private party, or corporate event.
A popular lesson option is Bill's Monday Tune-Up. Held on the 2nd & 4th Mondays of the month from 6:30-7:30pm, the Monday Tune-Up is limited to 6 people and pre-registration is required. As with his private lessons, the Monday Tune-Up is tailored to each attendee's level of expertise.
New to Bill's lesson options are video lessons in which you e-mail Bill 4 videos and he will e-mail you back a complete voice-over video analysis in slow motion and stop action with a model to compare yourself to including drills and instructions on how to practice your changes. After practicing Bill's suggestions you'll send Bill another 4 follow-up videos for him to analyze your progress.
LBCA Youth Learn-To-Bowl Clinic
Even though the July 26, 2015 Lake County Bowling Association Youth Learn-to-Bowl Clinic was sparsely attended the ones who came got some wonderful on-lane and classroom help to improve their bowling game. After a short classroom presentation Bill took them out on the lanes, video taped, and worked personally with each attendee. Proceeds from the clinic were all donated to the USBC's Bowling to Veterans Link (BVL) benefiting the men and women in our armed forces. CLICK HERE to view the 2015 flyer.
